Week 4 - 5E Instructional Modeling

 

What did I learn this week? 
This week in lab, we learned about 5E modeling and were able to delve into what each part entails for science instruction. Below, I have attached our group's slides for the presentations we did in class, summarizing each of the 5 E's. I enjoyed learning more about the evaluation portion as we discussed traditional and non-traditional forms of assessing student understanding at the end of the unit, my favorite being concept maps or group projects!

Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? 
After learning about each of the 5 E's in 5E instructional modeling, I was able to reflect back on my own experiences in science education and could think of several instances in which I, as a student, felt like I was a part of each stage. Being able to break each E down with my group helped to foster my understanding of my role as a teacher for each, as well as what my students' roles would be. 

How can you apply what you learned to your teaching in the future? 
After this week's lab, I was able to better understand how to differentiate my instruction so that students are getting the most out of each science unit. I felt that learning about engaging and what that looks like in this model was crucial as it's not just getting students excited to learn but also taking the time to see what they already know and build off of their prior knowledge.

I also like that you pointed out how this model will help you to differentiate instruction for your future students. I hadn't thought about it in this way before! :)

  2. Hi Maddy! I really enjoyed how you added your presentation to the post. It gives people a better understanding of what the 5E model and its phases. I also liked how you related it back to when you were in science education and found yourself apart of the phases.

Week 8 - Genetic Materials

  1. What did I learn this week?  This week, we continued talking about DNA and how DNA is the blueprint for living things. We watched a few videos explaining DNA and how it's located within the nucleus of a cell. DNA looks like a twisted latter that has bases paired together. We talked about how Adenine is paired with thymine and cytosine is paired with guanine. It seems like a twisted ladder and we were actually able to participate in an activity where we created our own strands of DNA. We mix and matched the sides that bases were on and even twisted it to create something that actually looked just like DNA! We also took a look into creating our children and used a coin to determine the genes that the parents had. It was very similar to an activity that I did back in 7th grade where we did something similar. Week 15 - Conservation of Mass

What did I learn?  Today we got to use vinegar, baking soda, and bottles to measure the reaction of the two being mixed together. We were observing the way the mass is conserved when things are mixed. My group chose to investigate whether the reactions that occurred would differ in the size of the bottle. We used the same amount of vinegar and the same amount of baking soda in each bottle. We also measured the mass with the limp balloon on the bottle both before and after the reaction. We found that there was a difference but it was less than have a gram that decreased from the mass.  How can you apply what you learned to your future teaching?   In this weeks lab, we were given the option to choose what we wanted to collect data over to see how mass might change when you have two things mixing together. Week 11 - Chemistry

M&M's in Water  Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?   During the stations, we were using terms to describe what we were observing. Some of the observations were things that we already knew, or things that we predicted and expected to occur from these experiments. Some of the experiments felt very familiar to me and like i've done them before, but it was definitely fun to get to participate in them again.  What did you learn this week?   This week in lab we went around to different stations observing different things that we noticed happening, how we could explain these happening to students, and came up with questions that students might have come up.
